Morning (9-noon): Academic orientation and survival Dutch lesson; registration with American consulate. Sandwich lunch provided.

Afternoon (1-3 PM): Walking/bus tour of city with remainder of late afternoon and evening free for exploration, reading.

Dinner on your own (suggestions provided).

Field trip to Den Haag (The Hague) (9-5): travel by train to tour the Binnenhof met Ridderzaal (Parliament and Knights Hall) and the Tweede Kamer (Lower House of Parliament) – possible meeting with parliamentary staff, depending on availability; tour of the Vredespaleis (Peace Palace), the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court (depending on whether the courts are in session and whether a trial is relevant to course concerns, it may be possible to attend) [possible guest lecturer to accompany and lead tour].

Group dinner in The Hague or on the beach in Scheviningen; return to Utrecht on your own.

Morning seminar (9 AM-noon): Religion and Dutch toleration [Guest lecture] Box lunch provided for train.

Afternoon (1-5 PM): Field trip to Leiden: walking tour of sites associated with the Pilgrim sojourn and presence in NL, including the Pilgrim Church, the Pilgrim Museum, and the 15th c. Gothic Pieterskerk, the burial site of 17th c. Pilgrim leader John Robinson (tour by Leiden VVV—tourist office); general Dutch culture: hofjes (almhouses) and the municipal windmill museum (de Valk); multilingual public art; group dinner at Oudt Leyden, a renowned restaurant where pannenkoeken are still served on traditional blue-and-white platter-sized plates.

Students can opt to stop and stay overnight in Amsterdam in a hostel at their own expense, or else return to Utrecht.

Optional early afternoon field trip to Oudewater by public bus; visit to the Heksenwaag (witches’ weighing house) in this small and very picturesque town. [During the 16th century, women suspected of witchcraft were weighed to determine their guilt or innocence; the weighmaster in Oudewater was empowered to weigh them in public and was known to have a very “fair” scale; he found very few witches, helping to abate the hysteria.]
